The 16th Annual Walk highlighted another special area of Wellfleet.
Walkers parked at the National Seashore Great Island Parking Lot (1440 Chequessett Neck Road) on Saturday, September 7. They were shuttled from that lot to Duck Harbor where the actual walk began at 9:00 am. The walk finished back at the Great Island lot.

Note the parking lot, labeled as “Great Island Trail”
The walk focused on Griffin Island. Walkers noted work on the Herring River restoration project just before the parking lot. Only one lane is open, which is controlled by a traffic light.
Experts presented short talks along the walk. Topics included Duck Harbor’s history and recent over wash flooding, the Kuhn modernist house, Griffin Island’s early settlements, the history of High Toss culvert and road history and the current plans to reengineer it, the Herring River restoration project, this summer’s mass dolphin strandings, the Native American heritage, and the parking lot previously at the Gut.
The walk took about 2.5 hours. The trail includes hills, dirt roads and narrow paths, as well as mosquitos, ticks, brambles, and poison ivy. Water, insect repellent, walking shoes, and long pants were recommended.
